Louisa Schot (1955-2012)

Louisa’s official artist’s career at Atelier Herenplaats started in June 2002. She first had a few months of apprenticeship to see if it suited her. Before working at Herenplaats Louisa worked in another workshop where she drew and painted. Making art is essential for Louisa, but the social surroundings and the people with whom she works are just as important for her.

Louisa has boundless imagination and a unique look at the world around her. She’s inspired by anything from commercial ads to vacation snapshots. She processes the images in her own way and then very often processes her drawing again and again. The end product is an abstraction of the original image and for the viewer an independent new scene.

Since Louisa started working at Atelier Herenplaats she’s developed her own style, her own hand writing if you will. Linear, often black and white drawings in ink or pencil, occasionally coloured, make up most of her work. The subjects can be persons she knows or television personalities, animals or objects. Louisa tends to draw parts of the subjects she cannot see, as well as those parts that are visible to her. She can draw, for example parts of the body, which are concealed by clothes or the backside of a person facing her. As a result she lets us in on the world mirrored in her head more than the scene in front of her.
